Community Based Programs

Therapeutic Foster Care
The BRC Therapeutic Foster Care Program is designed to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for youth that must be removed from their family. The Therapeutic Foster Care home provides a stable, predictable, nurturing home environment with a teaching parent. The parent supports the youth in learning healthy responses in stressful situations, and to develop socially appropriate behaviors. The youth is matched with a teaching family that can maximize the youth's strengths and provide effective treatment. Home visits with the family are planned when appropriate to assist the youth in adjusting to the home. As the youth progress toward meeting the goals of treatment, a step-down program is implemented to assist the youth in a less structured setting. At this level, all adjunctive support is provided in the community.

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent please call us at 757-461-8926 or email us at admissions@barryrobinson.org.
Independent Living

The BRC Independent Living Program offers a supervised apartment based program, which supports youth in development of skills that are necessary to function independently and successfully in the community. The program offers decreasing levels of supervision and support as the youth develops life and vocational skills. The program focuses on development of financial responsibility, community living, pre-vocational skills, continuing education, community linkage, health awareness, and transportation skills.

Prevention Programs
BRC's Prevention Programs offer early intervention options which include:
Alternatives to Violent Behavior: An anger management and conflict resolution program for youth from grades 3 to 12 who demonstrate violent and aggressive behavior. This program stresses personal and interpersonal anger management techniques, team building and cooperative learning strategies to enhance self-esteem and social interaction skills, in addition to goal development and personal improvement planning.
Consultation Services: Training for staff of youth-serving professions, schools, courts, and mental health agencies to implement these prevention programs in their communities.

HomeBase Services
The BRC HomeBase Program is a client centered, family focused, community based approach to mental health intervention providing counseling services and support for children and their family members. This occurs in the home to prevent the child's removal from the home or to assist in transitioning back into the home after an out of home placement. Services provided include comprehensive assessment of family functioning, parent skill training and problem solving, crisis management and stabilization, management of violent and aggressive behaviors, medication management via physician consultation, community resource linkage, and individual mentoring and support.
