Launching a new book, Deployment: One of Our Pieces is Missing, highlighted The Barry Robinson Center’s third annual Month of the Military Child Spring Fling April 21.
The Barry Robinson Center sponsored this children’s book, published by the National Center for Youth Issues (NCYI). Julia Cook, national award winning author, counselor and parenting expert, attended the Spring Fling to read her book. She appreciated the chance to share it with Barry Robinson residents and family members.
“This is a very proud moment for me. This book is for you, and I want it to work for every kid, big and small,” Cook told the audience.
The opportunity for The Barry Robinson Center to sponsor the book began in mid-2017 when CEO Rob McCartney met and talked with staff from NCYI. The book development and publishing process – a first for the Center – involved many staff members and residents.
“We met with our residents and staff from military families, to hear their feedback, ideas and their own stories, which we shared with Julia to incorporate into the book,” McCartney said. Military-connected and other staff reviewed story drafts and illustrations during the process. They provided recommendations to help ensure its usefulness and authenticity.
The book also includes tips for adults to help children process their questions and feelings about the deployment and reintegration of a military parent. It’s been designed to equip military families with an approachable way to discuss all aspects of deployment, positive and negative.
“We celebrate children from military-connected families because our kids and parents serve right alongside the military member. These kids encounter different challenges dues to multiple moves and deployments. We recognize this, and say thank you for what you do,” said McCartney. “Military service also brings many benefits, and the resilience we see in our military-connected kids is amazing.”
