Golfing for Children’s Mental Health

June 20, 2019

Thanks to the generosity of many golfers, the region’s first Catholic Cup found its home for the next year at The Barry Robinson Center.

On June 7, 2019, The Barry Robinson Center and Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia went head-to-head in a friendly golf competition. The goal: to help raise awareness and support children’s mental health. Together, the two organizations raised more than $16,000 for the cause.

“As excited as we are to bring home and display the Catholic Cup on campus, we’re even more appreciative of everyone who donated, volunteered and turned out to support children’s mental health,” said Rob McCartney, CEO of The Barry Robinson Center. “Mental disorders in children and teens are more common than many people realize. The need for services continues to grow. It’s our privilege to help many families navigate the journey to better mental health.”

Founded just one year apart, The Barry Robinson Center and Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia have been serving families and children since the 1930s.

The Barry Robinson Center offers a residential treatment program for boys and girls, ages 6-17, from military-connected families. Treatment addresses a variety of mental health issues, including a dual diagnosis program for teens with substance abuse issues. The Center also offers community-based services – an outpatient substance abuse program for teens, intensive in-home services and a treatment foster care program.

Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia provides an array of services that strengthen and support individuals, families and communities based on the value and dignity of human life. CCEVA provides mental health counseling services on a sliding fee scale including counseling for families and children. CCEVA also provides student assistance counseling in local area Catholic schools.

“The Catholic Cup Golf Tournament was a great opportunity for two organizations who have been working together for over 85 years to come together in a fun way to raise money for children’s mental health,” said Chris Tan, CEO, Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia. “We are grateful for all of our very generous sponsors who support our mission and our work to serve children and families in need in our community. We look forward to working together for the next 85 years and to bringing the Cup back to Catholic Charities next year!”
