Southeastern Virginia is home to the world’s largest Navy base and thousands of service members from all branches of the military. The region appreciates this strong military presence. And The Barry Robinson Center stands together with other partners in the community to support the military. Part of this support involves understanding the unique challenges military families face surrounding mental health.
That’s why the Center is hosting the region’s inaugural Charlie Mike “Continue Mission” Training Seminar. The training seminar will be held April 4, 2019, in Chesapeake, Va. This event has been developed to enhance the knowledge of mental health professionals, social workers, case managers, school staff, and many other service providers.

Keynote speakers are General Mark Graham (Ret.) and his wife Carol, who are tireless champions of military and civilian efforts to promote mental health and suicide prevention awareness and to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health care.
Other presenters include staff from Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD) and Portsmouth Naval Medical Center
For 85 years, the Center has been improving the lives of children and families. Today, the Center is recognized as a premier non-profit behavioral health system. Now, the Center is expanding its specialized support for the mental health of military children and families by partnering with CHKD to host the first Charlie Mike training seminar.
“The title Charlie Mike was inspired by Special Operations Forces who often use the term as code for Continue Mission. Whether you are experiencing a mission that requires a little extra courage or an active mission that gets interrupted, Charlie Mike is all about making the mission happen,” said CEO Rob McCartney. “It’s about never giving up until the mission is complete. Helping military families is our mission.”
Embedded within the military culture are many challenges that families proudly endure in service to our country, McCartney explained. The Center and CHKD are convening like-minded partners to continue the mission of promoting mental health for these families.
“This seminar will bring together clinical expertise and practical tools, while fostering collaboration in the community, so we may better serve the military families that serve us all,” he added.
