The Barry Robinson Center
5-Day new Community Challenge

We know that a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) move is more than a change of address…it often means leaving behind familiar routines, trusted adults, and valued friendships. As the only residential treatment center in the nation 100% dedicated to military-connected youth and families, we created a 5-Day New Community Challenge that can be shared with military families as they settle in!

Small Steps. Big Confidence.

Moving to a new community can feel overwhelming, but every small step helps you feel more at home. Challenge your family and military-connected youth to complete one activity each day!

Day 1: Explore Your New World

Take a walk or drive around your new neighborhood as a family.

Challenge:

Find one place you’d like to visit again (park, coffee shop, library, ice cream shop, trail, etc.).

Establishing your new favorite places is a great way to make your new community feel like home!

Day 2: Say Hello

Challenge yourself to make one positive connection.

  • Introduce yourself to a classmate.
  • Say hello to a neighbor.
  • Thank a teacher or coach.
  • Ask someone a simple question.

Remember: Small conversations build confidence!

Day 3: Find Your Thing

Every community has something for everyone.

Challenge:

Research one club, sport, volunteer opportunity, hobby group, or school activity that interests your family or youth.

Even if you’re not ready to join today, knowing what’s available is a great first step!

Day 4: Stay Connected

Moving doesn’t mean leaving friendships behind.

Challenge:

Encourage youth to stay connected with healthy friendships from your previous community.

Friendships can survive distance!

Day 5: Celebrate Your Progress

Take a moment to recognize everything your family or youth has accomplished this week.

Youth may want to complete these sentences:

  • One thing I feel more confident about is…
  • One thing I’m looking forward to is…
  • One goal I have for next week is…

Remind youth that belonging doesn’t happen overnight. Every smile, conversation, and new experience helps build connections in a new community!

Bonus Challenge for Military-Connected Youth

Show kindness to someone else who may be new. Sometimes the best way to feel like you belong is to help someone else feel welcome.

Watch for Signs that Extra Support May be Needed: Some adjustment challenges are expected but seek additional support if a child experiences persistent anxiety, withdrawal, changes in sleep or appetite, or prolonged sadness.
